BASIC SEARCHES

KEY WORD(s)

The KEY WORD(s) search finds words that are located anywhere in a record.

At the search prompt, enter the term(s) that you would like to search. The system will look for records that contain all of your search terms.

SAMPLE searches:

  • cats dogs
  • gardening wisconsin

You may also use OR or NOT to either broaden or limit your search:

  • cats OR dogs (will find records that have either cats or dogs in the record)
  • cats NOT dogs (will find records with cats but not dogs)

AUTHOR, Performer, Composer, etc.

The AUTHOR search finds authors, composers, conductors, performers, actors and film directors. The system will look for the closest match alphabetically to your entry.

At the search prompt, enter the author's last name followed by his/her first name or initial. Enter corporations and government bodies directly.

SAMPLE searches:

  • tchaikovsky, p
  • london philharmonic

TITLE Key Word(s)

The Key Word(s) in TITLE search finds a word or words in any location in the title. This search is especially useful when you are unsure of the title or if you are doing a topical search.

At the search prompt, enter a word or words from the title or topic in any order.

SAMPLE search: wind gone

will retrieve titles such as:

  • Gone with the wind [videorecording]
  • The Art of gone with the wind

TITLE starts with

The TITLE starts with search finds the closest match alphabetically to the first word or words you enter from a title. This search is most useful if you are searching for a one-word title or if you know the first few words of the title you are looking for.

At the search prompt, enter the first word or words from the title.

SAMPLE search: client

will retrieve a list of titles such as:

  • Clickwhistle
  • The client
  • Client: a novel
  • A client called Noah

SUBJECT Key Word(s)

The Key Word(s) in SUBJECT search finds a word or words in any location in the Library of Congress (LC) subject heading.

At the search prompt, enter a word or words from the subject.

SUBJECT HEADING starts with

The SUBJECT HEADING starts with search will find the closest match alphabetically to the first word or words you enter from the Library of Congress subject heading.

At the search prompt, enter the first word or words in the LC subject heading.

SERIES Title starts with

The SERIES Title starts with search will find the closest match alphabetically to the first word or words you enter from the series title.

At the search prompt, enter the first word or words in the series title.

SAMPLE searches:

  • american girl
  • national geo

CONTENTS (Songs, Plays, etc.)

The CONTENTS search finds main words in any location of the titles of songs, plays, short stories or video episodes.

At the search prompt, enter a word or words from the song, play, short story or video episode.

SAMPLE search: daisy

will retrieve titles such as:

  • Let's have a song party, a sound recording that includes the song "Daisy, Daisy"
  • Introduction to the novel, which includes an article on the novel Daisy Miller

International Standard Book #

The International Standard Book # (ISBN) is a unique standard number assigned by most publishers to each book. The ISBN is often found on the back of the book near the UPC. The ISBN search is not a true browse search as the exact ISBN is required to find a match.

FORMAT

This is a group of indexes for audiovisual format materials including magazines and web resources. Searching in one of these indexes will retrieve items of a certain format.

AUDIO BOOK Title starts with

The AUDIO BOOKS Title starts with search allows you to browse alphabetically through the list of audio book titles in both cassette and compact disc format.

At the search prompt, enter the first word or words in the audio book title.

AUDIO BOOK Key Word

The AUDIO BOOKS Key Word search finds a word or words in any location of an author's name, a recording title, or a subject heading. This index includes recorded books, radio shows, and self help titles on audiocassettes, compact discs, phono recordings and book/tape sets.

At the search prompt, enter a word or words in any combination.

MAGAZINE Title starts with

The Magazine Title starts with search allows you to browse alphabetically through the list of magazine titles.

At the search prompt, enter the first word or words in the magazine title.

When viewing a magazine record, click on Holdings to view and place holds on specific copies.

MAGAZINE Title Key Word

The MAGAZINE Title Key Word search finds a word or words in any location of a magazine title.

At the search prompt, enter a word or words from a title in any combination.

will retrieve titles such as:

  • Cat fancy
  • Cats
  • Cats magazine

MUSIC Title starts with

The MUSIC Title starts with search allows you to browse alphabetically through the list of music titles in both cassette and compact disc format.

The MUSIC Key Word finds a word or words in any location of an author's (composer or musician) name, a recording title, a song title or a subject heading. Music and sound effect compact discs, audiocassettes, phono recordings and scores are included in this index.

SOFTWARE Title starts with

The SOFTWARE Title starts with sesarch allows you to browse alphabetically through the list of computer software titles.

At the search prompt, enter the first word or words in the computer software title

SOFTWARE Key Word

The SOFTWARE Key Word Search finds a word or words in any location of an author's name, a title or a subject heading of a computer software program. This index includes computer software and interactive multi-media computer programs.

At the search prompt, enter a word or words in any combination.

  • juvenile software

VIDEO Title starts with

The Video Title starts with search allows you to browse alphabetically through the list of video titles in both VHS and DVD format.

At the search prompt, enter the first word or words in the video title.

VIDEO Key Word

The VIDEO Key Word search finds a word or words in any location of an author's (director, actor, producer) name, a title or a subject heading of a VHS videorecording or DVD.

To find a DVD title, include DVD in your search

At the search prompt, enter a word or words in any combination.

CHILDREN'S

This is a group of indexes for children's materials. Searching in one of these indexes will retrieve only materials for children in any format (books, sound recordings, computer software or videorecordings). .

Children's AUTHOR

The Children's Author search finds authors which most closely match your entry. For more details on searching authors, see AUTHOR search above.

At the search prompt, enter the author's last name followed by his/her first name or initial.

The Children's KEY WORD search finds a word or words in any location of an author's name, a title or a subject heading of a children's item.

WEB RESOURCES

WEB RESOURCE Title starts with

The WEB RESOURCE Title starts with search allows you to browse alphabetically through the list of web resources titles. Included are Netlibrary titles, titles from the magazine databases Ebscohost and Proquest, and web sites selected by library staff.

At the search prompt, enter the first word or words in the Netlibrary, magazine title or web site title.

When viewing web resources titles, click on the URL to access the Netlibrary, Ebscohost or Proquest title or wet site. You must be authenticated to check out Netlibrary titles, please contact your library staff for assistence.

WEB RESOURCE Key Word

The WEB RESOURCE Key Word search finds a word or words in any location of an author's name, a title or a subject heading of a Netlibrary title, electronic magazine title or web site.

At the search prompt, enter a word or words in any combination.

SAMPLE search: gardening

will retrieve titles such as:

  • National Gardening Association (web site)
  • Taylor's dictionary for gardeners (Netlibrary title)
  • Flower and garden (Ebscohost title)

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS

The Clubs and organizations database includes records for non-profit clubs and community service organizations in the LINKcat service area. Organizations are responsible for providing up-to-date information. Many records include a URL to link to the web site for that organization from the LINKcat database.

Clubs & Organizations KEY WORD

This search will locate main words from organizations' names and descriptions. If you wish to locate an organization in a certain community, enter the community name or county name if it is part of the official organization name. Examples:

Clubs & Organizations NAMES

This search will locate organization names beginning with the word or string of words in the name you enter. Enter the first word or words from an organization name. It is not necessary to enter the entire name. Examples:

Clubs & Organizations SUBJECTS

You may find clubs & organizations by entering a Library of Congress Subject heading. Enter the first word or words from the subject heading. Examples:

NEWSPAPERS

The newspaper indexes allow you to search indexes to local newspapers created by various libraries.

Baraboo News Key Word and Subject

These indexes provide references to birth, death, and marriage announcements from the Baraboo News Republic, Baraboo Daily News, and the Baraboo Evening News. This is a work in progress funded by grants from the Sauk County Arts, Humanities, and Historic Preservation Committee and from Baraboo Public Library's endowment fund interest. The dates covered are as follows: 1850-1900, 1901-1911, 1913, 1931-1950, 1985, 1992-1994. For information on obtaining paper copies of obituaries, see the Baraboo Public Library's Obituary Request Procedure. (Please note that you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open this file.)

Mount Horeb News Key Word and Subject

These indexes provide references to birth, death, wedding, anniversary, and reunion announcements from the Mount Horeb Mail, Mount Horeb Times, Mount Horeb Progress, Mount Horeb Weekly News, Blue Mounds Weekly News, and the The Dane County Sun. Eventually the years covered will be 1883 - 2005. The Mount Horeb Public Library is still working on indexing back issues. To search the key word index, enter terms such as "birth," "death," "wedding," "anniversary," or "reunion" in combination with a family name such as "smith." Browse the Subject index for surnames or individuals such as "smith, john."

Portage News Author, Key Word and Subject

These indexes include topical references to articles from the Portage Daily Register from May 1995 forward. Search topics such as "schools" by using the key word index or browse the subject list for subjects such as "airplane accidents." To submit a request for a paper copy of an article, obituary, etc., e-mail the Portage Public Library at porill@scls.lib.wi.us or contact the library via phone at 608-742-4959 and ask for the Reference Desk.

Reedsburg News Key Word and Subject

These indexes provide references to birth, obituary and marriage announcements from the Reedsburg Times, Reedsburg Free Press, Reedsburg Report, Reedsburg Independent and the Reedsburg Times Press. Eventually the years covered will be 1888 - present. The Reedsburg Public Library is still working on indexing of back issues. To search the key word index, enter terms such as "birth", "obituary" or "marriage" in combination with a family name such as "smith." Browse the Subject index for individuals such as "smith, john."

Wis. State Journal Key Word and Subject

These indexes include references to obituaries from 1960 to date. General articles are indexed from May 1966 to April 1996. See BadgerLink for a current newspaper subject index. To receive paper copies of obituaries, go to Madison area obituaries.

Wisconsin Magazines, Author, Key Word and Subject

Magazines indexed include: Corporate Report Wisconsin, 1998-, In Business, 1998-, Madison Magazine, 1998-, Wisconsin Academy Review, 1998-, Wisconsin Natural Resources, 1998-, and Wisconsin Trails, 1998-. In the author index, search by article author name, such as "knowles, gary." In the Key Word index, search for topical terms such as "brats". Browse the subject index by terms such as "underground railroad."
