Obtaining, Installing, and Configuring Eudora Light for Windows 95
This document is http://www.scls.lib.wi.us/staff/modules/email/eudora95.html,
last updated June 12, 1996.
Eudora Light is an email client suitable for use on the LINK network for
accessing any POP mail server (including the SCLS mail server). It can be
installed for as many users or accounts as needed on a single PC. The initial
installation takes about 4MB of disk space during the installation process,
and a little over 1.2 MB after installation. This 1.2 MB is a baseline figure,
and the space needed will increase as mail is collected over time. If your
disk space is limited, contact the Automation office to discuss your options.
Eudora can be set up to handle multiple email accounts or multiple users.
However, users who need to manage multiple accounts or who need advanced
automated sorting and tagging features might wish to consider another freeware
or commercial email client. Eudora Light is the only package officially
supported by the Automation office at this time, but many other clients
are available for you to choose from.
Obtaining Eudora Light for Windows
The installation package for Eudora Light can be obtained via FTP using
either a web browser or using a simple FTP client. Your PC must be configured
to use Trumpet Winsock or Win95 PPP as an IP-aware host and registered with
the Automation office. Note that the FTP server specified in this document
is not accessible from outside of the LINK network.
Please use FTP during non-peak hours at your library. Also, if your PC does
not have much memory (8 MB or less), you should quit any other large applications
(WordPerfect, Lotus, etc.) before launching Netscape or your FTP client.
A) Retrieving the installer via FTP using a web browser.
If Netscape or Mosaic is installed on your computer, you can
get the Eudora installer at the URL ftp://ftpstaff/apps/win/eudor154.exe
B) Retrieving the installer using a simple FTP client.
You should have an FTP client named WS_FTP on your hard disk.
Start the FTP client and open a connection using the following parameters.
Config name: SCLS
Host name: ftpstaff.scls.lib.wi.us
User ID: anonymous
Password: library@scls (will not be visible on your screen)
Remote Dir: /apps/win
Local Dir: c:\ws_ftp
When you connect to the ftp server successfully, you should
see a list of files that you can retrieve. Use the mouse to select the file
named eudor154.exe, then click the "left arrow" button.
The transfer may take up to half an hour, depending on how busy the network
is. A transfer status window of some kind should appear, showing you what
percentage of the transfer has been completed at any point.
Installing Eudora Light for Windows
If you need help with any aspect of the installation, please contact the
Automation office.
At this point, you should have retrieved the appropriate computer file from
the SCLS FTP server. If you got the file using Netscape, the file is where
you told Netscape to put it (the default location if you did not change
it is c:\netscape). If you got the file using WS_FTP, the file is in your
ftp directory (c:\ws_ftp). If you are not sure where the file went, use
the Find command on the Windows 95 Start menu. Note that the file may appear
in your windows as either Eudor154 or Eudor154.exe, depending on how you
have your system set up to display file extensions (the .xxx part of file
names).
Setting up the Eudora Installer Wizard
- Quit from any large applications that you have open (i.e. Netscape,
WS_FTP, WordPerfect, etc.).
- Open < My Computer / (C:) >.
- Use < File menu / New / Folder > to create a new folder and
name it eutemp.
- Open the eutemp folder by double-clicking it.
- Move the eudor154.exe file into the directory named eutemp. Note:
to move files under Windows 95, you cannot simply drag them with the mouse
as you may have done in Windows 3.1. Dragging a file with the mouse creates
a Windows 95 shortcut icon. To actually MOVE the file:
- Position the cursor over the icon and press down the Left mouse button.
- Continue to hold down the mouse button and press down the Shift key.
- Continue to hold down the Shift key and drag the icon to its destination.
- Let go of the mouse button and the Shift key.
- The eudor154.exe file is a compressed archive of several other files.
Double click it and you will see a list of file names scroll down in a new
"DOS" window.
- When this new window has the word "Finished" in it's title
(should be very quick), close it with the X icon in the upper right corner
of the window.
- Delete the file named eudor154.exe, as it will no longer be needed.
To delete a file in Windows 95, put the cursor over it and press the Right
mouse button. Choose Delete from the pop up menu that appears.
Using the Eudora Installer Wizard
- You should still have the eutemp folder window open from the previous
steps. If not, open < My Computer / (C:) / eutemp >.
- Double click the file named Setup (or setup.exe) to launch the Installer
Wizard. The wizard will take a moment to start up, and then will give you
a window named Welcome.
- Read the Welcome window, then click the Next button.
- Continue on with the installation by reading the information that
is provided on the screen and clicking the Next button until the installation
is complete.
- When prompted to read the Read Me file, click the No button (unless
you are extremely curious and technically minded).
- When the installer wizard is done its window will close.
- Delete the eutemp directory and all of its contents, as they are no
longer needed.
Creating Multiple Eudora Configurations for Separate Accounts
- Open < My Computer / (C:) >.
- Use < File menu / New / Folder> to create a new folder. Name
the folder eudora.xxx, where XXX are the initials of the person for whom
you are installing Eudora.
- Open < My Computer / (C:) / eudora >.
- Find the file named eudora.ini and copy it to the new eudora.xxx directory.
To COPY a file using Windows 95:
- Position the cursor over the icon and press down the Left mouse
button.
- Continue to hold down the mouse button and press the Control key.
- Continue to hold down the Control key and drag the icon to its destination.
- Let go of the mouse button and Control key.
- Drag the icon for the Eudora application (the mailbox icon) from c:\eudora
to c:\eudora.xxx. In this case, do not hold down Shift or Control, as the
goal is to create a Windows 95 shortcut.
- Find the new icon in the c:\eudora.xxx directory. It should be the
same mailbox icon as the original Eudora, but with a little arrow in a white
square (the Win 95 shortcut symbol) in the lower left corner. Select this
icon by clicking it once.
- Position the cursor over the icon and press the Right mouse button.
Choose Rename from the popup menu that appears. Name this icon "X's
Email" (substitute a real person's name for X).
- Position the cursor over the icon and press the Right mouse button.
Choose Properties from the popup menu that appears. Set the values of the
fields as follows:
Target: c:\eudora\eudora.exe c:\eudora.xxx (use real initials for
xxx)
Start In: c:\eudora.xxx
- Return to step 1 if you need to configure Eudora for another new user
or account.
Configuring Eudora Light for Windows
To run Eudora, double click on any of the icons (X's Email) that you created
in the steps above. The first time Eudora is run, you will be asked to configure
it. Your settings should be entered as shown below. The name of your mailbox
(yourbox below) is on your email account confirmation memo. If you need
to adjust the settings later, use the Options command on Eudora's Tools
menu.
You will see a window with a list of icons on the left side. Click on each
of the settings icons in turn to bring up a related set of parameters. Enter
the values as shown below.
