Searching Aids on the Internet

Remember when using the Internet that is a distributed, decentralized information system. Since there is no acquisitions policy, no bibliographic control, and no authority in general, it can make locating resources problematic. However, there are searching aids available on the Internet.

Gopher
Files mounted on gopher servers can be searched with services called "veronica" and "jughead." Here's a link to a site that offers Veronica Searches and one that offers Jughead Searches.
FTP
FTP sites are searched by a utility called "archie." Here's a link to ArchiePlex, a utility that offers several formats for searching.
Usenet
Usenet archives can be searched through a utility called Deja News , which bills itself as the Premier Usenet Search Utility. They have a FAQ and online help.
WAIS
Wide Area Information Servers. A link that was listed as a resource for searching WAIS is currently not helpful:Search Engines
