• What Can I Do on the Internet?

  • Utilize all of the services mentioned in the section on Basic Internet Services
    • Use email to correspond with other individuals, or to participate in discussion groups called listservs.

    • Use ftp to transfer files from the LINK or other information servers on the Internet.

    • Use gopher and telnet to reach other locations and their resources.

    • Subscribe to Usenet news in an area of interest to you.

    • Look up information on WAIS servers.

    • Examine all the resources available on the World Wide Web, starting with these pages from the LINK Internet Orientation.

    • Utilize the library services available on the Internet, as will be discussed at the Afternoon Session on Library Services

  • How Can I Get There?

    • Dial-up Access (through Internet Provider)
      • Online accounts

        These are the original "dial up" internet accounts most people used up until a few years ago. They utilized a unix command interface to navigate. These accounts are generally regarded as unfriendly to the uninitiated, but quite serviceable once you learn the commands. They are text only and lack the appeal of a graphical interface.

      • SLIP/PPP accounts

        Stands for Serial Line Internet Protocol/Point to Point Protocol. These are the accounts now widely available through local Internet providers. They allow a graphical interface.

    • Direct Access through LINK

      This afternoon we'll be showing you in detail how Internet access is provided through the LINK Network. This will be in two ways:

      • Terminal access

      • PC (Windows or Mac) access
