Internet Access from Terminals

Part of the LINK Internet Orientation: March 12, 1996.

Using Dynix Gateways

You will use Gateways on your Dynix terminals to connect to remote hosts from your staff accounts. Remember that access from a Dynix terminal is limited to only those sites listed. Entry into the sites depends on how busy the site is. It is likely that you will experience periods where you cannot connect to some of these sites. Dynix Gateways uses the telnet internet service.

To access Gateways from terminals in Dynix staff accounts:

1. Enter GA at any system menu:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                             MENU - MASTER (MAST)

3. To start the connection, enter the line number of the chosen site. If you wish to stop, enter Q to return to the system menu. Entering ? will access Online Help.
4. You will next see a destination screen providing valuable information about the site you will be connecting to. You should either print this out (it is an option on the menu) or make note of it in some other way. This screen lists the logon, logoff, and escape information. Without this information, you will not be able to connect to, or disconnect from, the remote host.

REMEMBER: when you connect to a a remote site via a Dynix gateway, you are leaving the Dynix system and will be interacting with a new host. Your Dynix commands will NOT work unless you are connecting to another Dynix site, such as Dakota, Hennepin, Kitsap, NYPL, Phoenis, Ramsey, Sonoma PL's. Here is a sample screen:
